The final crescendo of EMAP / EMARE and we are proud to be part of it! We are also very happy about all of the good things that came (and are still coming) out of our initial residency with Kontejner and the whole EMAP network. With good memories of the latest pandemic adapted online versions of Empathy Swarm first developped as part of Impakt’s A world without us revisited and Cyborg Futures, then evolved into Telehabitats for Werkleitz’s move to… festival this year, now being part of the Ars Electronica EMAP Garden!

Join us in the EMAP garden on Sunday, 12. September, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM !

Cyborg Futures – Performance Documentation

Documentation of the live performance Empathy Swarm Remote Memory  – Telerobotics for Social Interaction as a Symbiotic Reminiscence of Human-Machine Cohabitation –  (click on ‘Watch Performance’) as part of IMPAKT’s online exhibition Cyborg Futures – Who doesn’t want to live forever? While the exhibition is still online, you should check it out!

The interactions of the swarm were generating a live sound track, which the audience could influence, so don’t forget to switch on the sound!

The new year started and we finally found the time to cut the video material we filmed at QUT Art Museum in Brisbane.

Silent Running: Robertina and Kryten

With the dear help of professor Zorislav Šojat from Ruđer Bošković Institute, Zagreb, we finally managed to make the robots smooth and silent. 🙂

Learning about interrupt functions to get the update rates of the WiFi communication and the sending of PWM values to the brushless DC motors  independent of each other!

See Robertina and Kryten rolling smoothly on the grey “NASA” floor of the studio, while the prototyping of the next generation is in full work mode
–  10 robots to be seen soon, with new body and battery management!

It is so human this tiny little triangle: First ideas towards robotic empathy behavior!

Fritz Heider and Marianne Simmel’s analog overhead projector animations were already used in 1944 to demonstrate how easy it is for the observer’s brain to associate emotional attachment to inanimate objects and how our human brain is hard wired for compassion.

Empathy Swarm will transplant this from a digital to a physical environment by creating a swarm of robots that as a whole can adapt its behavior and interacts with the observer’s emotional feedback.
